First car-camp that still feels like camping
Chatfield or Mueller-style — walk to the bathroom, cook once, and quit before anyone wants the highway.
Do not start with a 14er trailhead and a three-mile pack-in. A first car-camp is a reserved site you can drive to, a bathroom you can find in the dark, and one meal that is not a science project.
Effort, for real
- Drive: under two hours from Denver if you can swing it
- Walk from car to tent: you should still be speaking to each other
- Night: one. Two nights is a sequel, not a debut.
What to pack
- The fat sleeping pads. Nobody “toughs it out” well at 2 a.m.
- Headlamps on every person, plus one extra
- A layer warmer than you think, even in July
- A breakfast you can eat if the stove sulks
The move
Set the tent before anyone is hungry. Eat early. Walk the loop once so everyone knows where the bathroom is. Lights out is a suggestion until 9, then it is a law. If someone wants the car at 1 a.m., the car is allowed. You still camped.
