Bear Lake without the circus
A Rocky Mountain National Park loop that stays short, scenic, and worth the timed-entry hassle.
Bear Lake is the RMNP starter hike for a reason. You get the postcard without a death march. Timed-entry rules still apply in peak season — grab the window the night before and pack like the parking lot will be a zoo.
Effort, for real
- Walk: about a mile around the lake if you stay on the loop
- Climb: polite, not heroic
- Time: two hours if you linger at the water
- Stretch goal: Nymph Lake only if energy is still high
What to pack
- Layers. The lake does not care that Denver was 88.
- Water for every person, plus one bonus bottle
- A sit pad or jacket so someone can rest without sitting in dirt
- A “we’re going home” snack that is better than the trail snacks
How to keep it fun
Pick a turnaround rule before you leave the lot — time, weather, or the first real complaint. If someone calls it, honor it. That one rule saves more days than any trail app.
Timed entry and shuttle details change. Check the park site the morning you leave.
