A Front Range sled day that stays cheerful
Genesee-style sledding — short walks, a steerable sled, and a hard stop before anyone is miserable.
You do not need a ski pass for a good snow day. A Front Range sled hill — Genesee, a neighborhood park after a storm, or a gentle ranch hill — is enough if you treat warmth like a project.
Effort, for real
- Walk from car to hill should be under five minutes
- One person at the top, one watching the runout
- Quit while cheeks are still pink, not blue
What to pack
- Waterproof mittens, plus a dry backup pair
- A foam sled or something you can steer. Saucers are chaos.
- Thermos cocoa. This is not optional.
- A dry bag for soaked layers so the car does not become a swamp
The rule
Ten good runs beat thirty grim ones. When the first person says they are done, you are done. The hill will still be there after the next storm.
